Let me say something about Jasmine Guy.
This woman was a bombshell in the โ90s. Beautiful. Talented. Magnetic. An absolute star.
And now that she is over 60, people have decided that her aging body and face are somehow public property for commentary.
Jasmine Guy does not owe us her 1990s face.
She does not owe us tighter skin.
She does not owe us fewer wrinkles.
She does not owe us the appearance of being 30 forever simply because we thought she was beautiful at 30.
She owes us nothing.
And honestly? There is something deeply feminist about allowing a woman to age without treating it like a personal failure.
We live in a culture that tells women:
~Be beautiful, but don’t try too hard.
~Age gracefully, but don’t actually LOOK your age.
~Take care of yourself, but don’t admit you’ve had work done.
~Embrace aging, but whatever you do, don’t visibly age.
Pick a damn lane. Please.
Men are routinely permitted to accumulate gray hair, wrinkles, laugh lines, dad bods and decades of experience and somehow become โdistinguished.โ
Women? We get interrogated for every line on our faces.
That isn’t aging being the problem.
It’s misogyny.
And Jasmine Guy is still Jasmine fucking Guy. ๐
An actress. A dancer. A singer. A director. A performer. A cultural icon. A woman who has given decades of her life to her craft.
Her value did not expire when her collagen production changed. Her beauty did not disappear because time moved forward. And she certainly doesn’t need to audition for our approval every time she walks into a room.
So for this Woman Crush Wednesday, I’m celebrating Jasmine Guy. Not because she looks like she did in 1990, but because she has had the privilege of making it to 60+ and is allowing herself to be a whole human being through every chapter of it.
That should be celebrated. Not ridiculed.
Because one day, if we’re lucky, we’ll all get old too.
And I hope the women coming behind us learn that getting older isn’t something to apologize for. Age is not the insult you think it is.
Happy WCW to the legendary Jasmine Guy. ๐
And to everybody making fun of an older woman’s appearance:
May you age exactly as gracefully as you deserve.
And THAT’S the bottom line.
